The Problem with Potholes
Monday, October 8, 2018Is your driveway or parking lot in need of repairs? If you have potholes, don’t wait for a second longer. Call Total Asphalt Paving, Inc. for asphalt resurfacing or Fresh Look Sealcoating (our sister company) for the best asphalt repair. Don’t put your vehicle – or worse, customers’ vehicles – at risk for damage. Unfortunately, potholes can cause serious damage to tires, wheels, and other car parts.
How Potholes Form and the Threats they Present to Drivers
No matter how hard you try to maintain your driveway or parking lot, potholes can form. This is because potholes happen when water seeps through cracks in the asphalt – even very small, undetectable cracks. Then, during the winter months, this water freezes and pushes sections of the pavement upward. Then, during the spring thaw, unsupported pockets develop, causing the asphalt to break and potholes to form. Then, if hit by drivers, the jarring impact caused by potholes can cause the following types of damage.
Flat Tires: When you suddenly strike a pothole with your car, truck, van, or SUV, the sudden shift of air inside the tire can cause the sidewall to blow out. Even if the tire does not immediately blow, even mild damage to a sidewall can cause air to slowly leak, so you will still need to replace the tire.
Wheel Trauma: Potholes have hard angles. And if you hit one hard enough with your vehicle, you can damage your wheels. After a collision with a pothole, check your wheels for bends and cracks.
Suspension and Steering Alignment: After hitting a pothole, you may notice that your car leans to the left or right. This is because a sudden jar from a pothole collision can knock your suspension and steer you out of alignment.
Clearly, you do not want potholes on your private or business property. So, contact Total Asphalt Paving, Inc. or Fresh Look Sealcoating for residential asphalt repair or commercial asphalt repair.
