Why Asphalt is a Good Winter Material for your Commercial Parking LotTuesday, November 29, 2022
If you run a business, you know the importance of making the most of your budget. You want to invest in things with the highest payoff, and you want to spend the least you reasonably can on maintaining your property while still keeping the place in nice shape. Unless you have an asphalt parking lot or driveway, you’re spending more than you need to on pavement maintenance. No other paving material can stand up to harsh Michigan winters as asphalt does. The cost and the benefits of asphalt paving for your business are unmatched.
Benefits of an asphalt commercial parking lot during winter
It’s no secret that winters are hard on your pavement. They bend and break pavement, causing cracks and potholes that need repair. If you want to spend less on repairs, take a look at how asphalt is able to cut down on maintenance costs.
Asphalt is one of the cheapest paving materials despite being so high quality. While this is a benefit year-round, it doesn’t hurt to save money for the winter, too.
Since asphalt is partly made of rubber material, it’s much more flexible than concrete. The reason that concrete breaks down so much during the winter is that the ice that freezes within it expands and cracks the concrete. But asphalt has a better ability to flex with the expanding ice, so it doesn’t crack as easily with that pressure.
Asphalt is porous
Another thing that fights against ice cracking your asphalt is that it’s porous. This allows more water to flow through the asphalt into the ground below, so less stays within the asphalt and there is less ice expanding within it.
Easy to maintain
Asphalt is very simple to maintain. If your asphalt does get cracks or potholes in it over time, it’s very easy to fill in. When you fill in a concrete pothole with more concrete, the filling solidifies into a separate piece, it doesn’t mold with the concrete around it. But asphalt is able to mold to the already set asphalt around it and blend in better.
Also, it’s very simple and low-cost to have a new seal coating put on your asphalt. It’s a quick process of applying the seal coat that keeps debris and water out, seals up cracks, and makes the asphalt look brand new again.

Comparing it with concrete, there’s not much reason to choose against asphalt if you want to save money, time, and stress.
